Green Space Lesson: Complexity of Ecosystems

Greenspace Lesson Plan – Brie & Eliza

This lesson plan contains two different tag-like games that help students explore ecosystems.

Curricular competencies that guide this lesson (Grade 3):

PHE: Explain how participation in outdoor activities supports connections with the community & environment. PHE: Develop and demonstrate safety, fair play, and leadership in physical activities.
SCIENCE: Identify some simple environmental implications of their and others’ actions.
Prior Knowledge​: ​Students should be familiar with the Big Idea: ​Living things are diverse, can be grouped, and interact in their ecosystems, ​& know the terms and purpose of ​decomposers, consumers & producers​.

Lesson learning outcomes – Students will be able to:

  • Express their understanding of the complexity of ecosystems by making connections to their own experiences in the games.
  • Demonstrate fair play in group physical activities through taking on different roles and cooperating in a team.
