Card Suit Relay warm-up for Grades 4/5

Card Suit Relay warm-up for Grades 4/5

Tessa Webb

This lesson could precede a racquet sport (ie badminton) activity, running activity, or a team sport activity (soccer, football, floor hockey, etc) as it warms up the leg muscles and prepares students for running and moving forward and laterally. Alternatively, it could be used before a low energy activity to contribute to students achieving their moderate to vigorous daily activity quota.

Grade: 4/5

Topic: Soccer

Lesson: #3 of #7

Lesson focus: teamwork, warming up specific muscles and learning new movements.

Equipment:  large playing cards, cones

Learning outcomes:  The students will be able to participate in moderate physical activity after a brief introduction and explanation.

The students will be able to show support for their team members during the activity.

Introductory activity/warm up:

5 mins

– Students will be warming up their leg muscles

– Students will be working cooperatively in teams

– students will be learning new ways to move through space (side-shuffle, high-knees, butt-kicks, and grapevines)

– students are divided into groups, have 5 people per team, assign one of the 4 card suits to each team (can have teams designated with the same card suit).

– They will line up at the end of the gym, cards are placed face down at half.

Organization:

Teaching Points:

– Teach proper technique for activities, proper technique and effective movement are just as important as speed.

– Bending and stopping are often times when you can become injured by stepping wrong or to fast (ie could twist an ankle), so discuss ways to avoid

– Encourage students to cheer each other on.

– When students collect 4 of their suit have them yell “PROOF”

– Use large cards or cone beside card to improve visibility for students.

Safety concerns and preventative measures: stopping and turning could result in injury, so being sure to warn students to reduce speed gradually and in a controlled manner before stopping and turning will mitigate this risk.
