Lesson Focus: Skipping, (step-hop pattern)
Materials: Drum & Cones (for shuttle relay)
What the kids already know: how to hop and hop on one foot
- We are extending what kids know – now they must hop on one foot moving forward (step) and alternating
Outline:
- Introduction (in circle)- everyone knows how to walk, now let’s review what we’ve learned already and practice hopping in one place with both feet → let’s practice hopping on one foot → we’re going to put hopping on one foot and walking TOGETHER to SKIP
- Demonstrate skipping and talk through opposite arms and landing on toes and balls
- Step-hop-step-hop
- Back foot near ground
- Opposite arm to leg
- Land toes first
- Everyone try to do it in one spot
- Explain activity and then say “Now find your own space!”
- Activity to introduce SKIPPING – Basic Step Pattern: Say step-hop-step-hop aloud as you do the motions in your own space
- Gather in a circle –> Introduce Drum Skipping activity (can also use clapping hands)
- 2 beats find a partner to skip with
- 3 beats link up with three and skip in a circle
- 1 beats to go back to skipping singularly
- Activity: shuttle Relay (simple practice)
- line up in groups of 4 at a line in the gym
- split into groups of two and have each group of two line up across from each other several meters away across the gym
- one person must skip across and link arms with a partner across from them, they both must then skip back across and link up with the third … and then the fourth… until the whole group is together on one side of the gym
- There’s a cool Metis dance we could do the NEXT class when skipping is mastered
