This warm-up allows students to practice skipping and jumping and may therefore be a good introduction to a lesson in a jump rope unit. Students may have learned the techniques for jumping and skipping in a previous lesson. This warm-up could be used to remind them of the skills they have been practicing and set students up to begin using a jump rope by skipping (one foot at a time) and jumping (two feet at a time). This would align with the BC PHE curriculum for grade 1, āproper technique for fundamental movement skills, includingĀ non-locomotor,Ā locomotor, andĀ manipulativeĀ skills.ā

Introductory activity/warm up
Students play āSpace Invadersā to practice skipping and jumping skills needed for jump rope.
Most students are satellites who move by skipping.
2 or 3 students are meteors move by jumping.
Meteors try to tag satellites. Satellites that are tagged become meteors and must also jump.
The game stops when all satellites are tagged and have become meteors. |

Ā Ask students to demonstrate a proper skip and jump.
Satellites and meteors can move freely within the basketball boundaries but should keep eyes open for peers around them. Ā Ā Tagging should be done gently with open hands only. |
Safety Concerns/Cautions:
- Students could injure themselves while jumping and skipping if done incorrectly. To minimize the chances of this students will be reminded to bend their knees when they jump and land on your toes when skipping, alternating arms
- Students may injure each other while attempting to tag classmates. Students will be reminded that tagging should only be done lightly and with an open hand.
- Students may bump into each other as they move around the play space and try to avoid ātaggersā. A play area will be chosen that is small enough to keep all students active while allowing them enough personal space to move around each other safely.
