Buggies Up warm-up for Grade 8

Buggies Up warm-up for Grade 8

Hannah Sharples

Following warm-up, students will be put into groups of six. Each group will find a hoop and play 2v2 basketball with two students observing. After 3 minutes the games will stop, observers will give feedback on passing and communication, and then switch with one of the pairs. This will repeat again so all pairs have had a chance to observe once and play twice. Next, students will be split into four teams and a game will be played on each half of the gym. This will be a modified version of basketball where the player with the ball can only take three steps while dribbling before they are required to pass the ball to a teammate.

Buggies Up warm-up: 5-10  mins

– 2 two circles, with a partner in each circle moving in opposite directions.

– Locomotion is varied by instructor (hopping, skipping, running).

– When “buggies up” called by teacher, students locate partners while continuing to move in opposite directions in circle.

– Partners stand back to back when paired, link arms, and bend knees to engage leg and core muscles until “buggies down” is called, or switch circles if “buggies switch” called. Last pair to link must do 5 jumping jacks, or burpees, sit ups, etc.

– Focus of warmup is physical awareness of self in relation to partner and others in circle, as well as strategizing and communicating with partner.

Organization

– Every player in inside circle (blue) has a partner in the outside circle (red).

– Poly spots used to indicate inside circle where inside partner will stand, outside partner stands 1 metre away to create outside circle.

– Inside circle moves counter-clockwise, outside circle moves clockwise.

– Instructor (teacher, or student if odd number of students) stands in centre.

Teaching Points

– Students are asked to remain moving in their circles when “buggies up” is called

– Encourage students to bend legs (like they are sitting in a chair) when linked to engage muscles.

– Before beginning instructions, have students get into circles

– Ask inside circle to pass on inside and outside circle to pass on outside when finding partners.

– Ask if there are questions before beginning.

Collision of players in circles is an important safety concern. Students should be instructed to keep head up when moving through space and pass on the inside of the circle if in inner circle, outside if in outer circle to avoid collision.
